Superintendent's Message on School Safety

Joint Statement on School Safety
Posted on 03/05/2018

These last few weeks have been challenging for all of us and certainly school safety awareness is heightened.  It is important for us to communicate to all of our parents, families, and community members that the safety of our schools and our children is of the highest priority.  The Waterford Police Department works closely with our school administrators to ensure that we have an effective school safety plan in place.  This plan is regularly reviewed and revised based upon best practices.

We have two school resource officers who work full-time in our schools.  Additionally, uniformed police officers make frequent and random appearances and safety walk-throughs at each of our schools.  They are knowledgeable as to what the normal environment looks like and the entire region’s police departments train together to quickly address any and all threats. The faculty and the students of each school also practice safety precautions and protocols on a regular basis in collaboration with Waterford Police Department and Waterford Fire Services.

We continue to ask for your assistance in two significant ways.  First, we ask that you monitor your child’s social media activity.  Secondly, we ask that you continue to reinforce with your child their obligation and yours, to report any suspicious activity or concerns that you may have to police.  The Waterford Police Department has several ways to do this – via Facebook at www.facebook.com/waterfordpolice, Twitter @WaterfordPolice, or search “Waterford Police Department” on Google play or Apple sites for our app.

We also want to announce that we will be holding school safety forums at each of the five schools in the near future.  Police and school district officials will jointly present the latest information on school safety.  More information on exact dates will be released soon.

Be assured that the Waterford Police Department and the Waterford Public Schools work together to continuously improve these safety and response protocols so that we can provide the safest learning environment possible for our students and staff. We maintain strong relationships with our Local, State, and Federal partners to ensure that we continue to receive the most up-to-date training and resources available to ensure everyone’s safety.

Sincerely,
